Shiraz Viognier

2015 Shiraz Viognier

Canberra District, New South Wales

One of our 12 wines of Christmas only available till 24th December or while stocks last. Our debut vintage. A delicious, elegant and mature wine. Earthy aromas, rich & complex flavours – plum pudding, cherries, chocolate & a silky smooth finish.

    Description

Re-released for Christmas from our private cellar stock, only available till 24th December or while stocks last. The Shiraz Viognier blend is well-established in Australia and particularly the Canberra District where it has acquired an outstanding reputation. It seems an unlikely pairing—a red and white grape—but it is in fact a perfect match with Viognier increasing the fragrance and complexity of the final wine.

2015 was an exceptional year for grape growing. Stephanie and Ben took ownership of the property at the beginning of the grape growing season in September 2014. Spring was unseasonably warm but with good rains that kicked off vine growth. Flowering was early but with hot dry conditions in November achieving good fruit set. Leading up to harvest, conditions were dry and warm—perfect to finish ripening and minimise disease. The fruit was hand-picked and processed within 24 hours on-site. A cold soak prior to fermentation and the inclusion of whole bunches in the ferment ensured maximum colour and flavour extraction. Co-fermented with 3% viognier (also grown at the Vintner’s vineyard). The wine was then pressed to a mixture of old and new French oak and allowed to mature for 14 months.
